This luxurious and beautifully decorated large 'maison de maitre' with an attractive walled garden and swimming pool has a fascinating history. In fact it used to be a convent and still boasts it's very own chapel! It is a testament to the owner's imagination to preserve the chapel in it's nearly original state; the alter, the lovely stain glass windows.
The owners have retained many original and fine features that one expects of a seigneur's house; spacious airy rooms, antique furniture, lamps and marble fireplaces. The bathrooms and bedrooms have been restored with fine materials - all bathrooms have been faced with red marble and renovated. There are in fact two vast living rooms, the second floor one retaining the original beam celing structure.
The house interior has been completely modernized (central heating, double-glazed windows throughout, etc) and has a fantastic state of the art modern kitchen. The terraces, of which there are many and the newly re-designed summer kitchen also have a contemporary feel with high quality garden furniture. The facade is still in need of some renovation in placesand the shutters are a bit weathered, but the lovely long views from the pool terrace make this a perfect holiday location. There is a family restaurant only a short walk away, as well as a good vegetable market twice a week. Excellent local wine.
The property is set in a walled private garden with large gates screening it from the street. The garden is fairly small (about 800m2) with several distinctive 'areas' to sit out:
Steps from front door lead down to a pool and pool terrace with some modern comfortable sun loungers. Some more steps to the left of the pool go up on to a very large terrace with a big outisde dining table and wraught iron chairs. The views from this terrace are long and lovely looking towards the Faugere hills.
The covered summer kitchen and bar has a designer feel and have just been finished this summer. As one goes through the summer kitchen there is actually another small 'breakfast terrace' with beautiful stone work and attractive garden furniture.
The swimming pool (11mx5m and 1m65 deep) has wide shallow steps. Alarm being installed for 2008. BBQ - designer! portable. The garden can be lit-up at night. The house facade, shutters and entry gates are showing signs of aging slightly but it doesn't detract from the overall impression.
Ground floor
4 steps lead from the outside into a large hallway (29m2). Doors off the hallway to the right go to the immense living room (53m2) decorated with style and luxury. There are 4 comfortable plush sofas furbished in expensive material and a large flat screen TV.
To the left is the exquisite dining room (27m2) with a wall mural, and some easy chairs. There is a large glass table which can seat up to 8 people. At the bottom of the hallway is a most unusual room - a small chapel (16m2), as the house used to be a convent. The owners decided to preserve it in it's original state partly as the house 'heritage', partly as a curiosity. The stained glass windows, the altar, and some of the religious relics are precious.
At the end of the corridor to the right is the modern state of the art kitchen (25m2) fully eqipped - large American fridge freezer, a cooker with oven, a central island with a double sink. There is a breakfast conservatory which leads to a small outside terrace with a table and chairs.
As you go through the chapel, large glass doors lead to an outside terrace with a fountain and attractive ironwork furniture. This terrace leads onto a covered summer kitchen with a bar and stools, which has a designer feel to it. This kitchen in turn leads to a large outside terrace with a big table and chairs, and beautiful views of the village of Murviel, and the Faugeres hills beyond. This terrace can be lit up at night. There are 4 chaises longues around the pool, which has shallow roman steps and is partially gated.
First floor
A wide shallow staircase with 26 steps lead to the first floor hallway. At the end of the hallway to the left is the 'office' - a large antique desk. This could be used as a 'quiet, working room'. (It is possible also to have a cot either in this or one of the upstairs bedrooms)
Go through the office to a bedroom with a double bed and an en suite shower room.
To the right is a huge master bedroom (40m2) with a 180 cm double bed, mirored wardrobes all along the wall, and an ensuite bathroom (20m2). The bathroom is completely faced with marble and has a corner bath, double wash basins, a wc.
Second floor
Staircase with 25 steps goes to the second floor. There is another vast living room (50m2) with comfortable furniture. To the left there is a large bedroom (29m2) with a beautiful beam ceiling structure, a double bed of 140 cm. To the right of the living room there is a fourth bedroom (20m2) with a double bed and a small single bed plus an adjoining bathroom with a bath, and wc |
